Like me, your first reaction to the name “Porsvik” might be, “Pors… what?” or simply, “Huh?” That was certainly my response when Gary—the host of many of the social pickleball games I frequent (“Host Gary”)—told me he had ordered the Porsvik Power Ares Gen4 Foam Paddle.

To be honest, I immediately assumed Porsvik was a Russian brand. The name certainly sounds like it could have come straight out of Eastern Europe. As it turns out, I couldn’t have been more wrong. Porsvik is actually a Chinese brand. Having never heard of the brand before, I approached the Power Ares with few expectations and a healthy dose of skepticism.

On paper, the Power Ares Gen4 Foam Paddle certainly looks promising. According to the manufacturer’s specifications, it features a Gen4 foam-enhanced construction, and a 3D 18K woven carbon fiber face. The paddle is designed to provide a combination of power, spin, stability, and comfort, while the foam-enhanced perimeter is intended to enlarge the sweet spot and improve overall consistency. Porsvik also highlights the paddle’s vibration-dampening characteristics and extended handle, making it suitable for players who value both performance and comfort during longer sessions.

My skepticism aside, after spending some time on court with the Power Ares, Gary came away impressed by several aspects of the paddle. What stood out most was its consistent response across the entire paddle face. Whether contact was made cleanly in the sweet spot or slightly off-center, the paddle remained predictable and controllable. The Power Ares also delivers a well-balanced blend of power and control, providing enough punch to finish points when opportunities arise without becoming overly reactive or difficult to manage during resets, drops, and other touch shots.

The extended handle provides a comfortable grip and ample room for grip adjustments, which is particularly useful for players who incorporate two-handed backhands or frequently transition between baseline and net play. Equally noticeable is the paddle’s ability to absorb shock and vibration effectively, reducing hand and arm fatigue during longer sessions. Combined, these characteristics make the Power Ares feel stable, comfortable, and easy to play with from the first game.

I did get the chance to play a few games with the Porsvik, and what struck me most was how effortless it felt. From the very first serves and returns, the paddle felt comfortable and intuitive, requiring little to no adjustment on my part. The transition was seamless, and I quickly found myself trusting its response and consistency.

That said, I didn’t get to spend as much time at the net as I would have liked, particularly in extended dinking exchanges where touch, feel, and control become even more apparent. As such, I wasn’t able to fully evaluate its soft-game performance firsthand. For that aspect of the review, you’ll have to take Gary’s word for it. 🙂
